چکیده

Species differ in their susceptibility to radiation through 24 differences in their ability to sustain toxic and genetic effects caused by 25 radiation. We censused breeding birds in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, 26 during 2011-2014 to test if the abundance and diversity of birds became 27 increasingly negatively affected by radiation over time. The abundance of 28 birds decreased with increasing level of background radiation, with 29 significant interspecific variation. Even though levels of background 30 radiation decreased over time, the relationship between abundance and 31 radiation became more negative over time. The relationship between 32 abundance and radiation became less negative with increasing trophic 33 level. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that the negative 34 effects of radiation on abundance and species richness accumulate over 35 time. 36 37

Journal of Ornithology Ecological differences in response of bird species to radioactivity from Chernobyl and Fukushima

Organisms differ in their susceptibility to ionizing radiation 27 although the ecological basis for such differences remain poorly 28 understood. We hypothesized that ecological characteristics such as body 29 size, diet, migration and pigments of plumage would predict the impact of 30 radiation on abundance through effects on relative food consumption rates, 31 free radicals and antioxidants. ...

Abundance of birds in Fukushima as judged from Chernobyl.

The effects of radiation on abundance of common birds in Fukushima can be assessed from the effects of radiation in Chernobyl. Abundance of birds was negatively related to radiation, with a significant difference between Fukushima and Chernobyl. Analysis of 14 species common to the two areas revealed a negative effect of radiation on abundance, differing between areas and species. The relations...

Comparison of the accident process, radioactivity release and ground contamination between Chernobyl and Fukushima-1

In this report, we have reviewed the basic features of the accident processes and radioactivity releases that occurred in the Chernobyl accident (1986) and in the Fukushima-1 accident (2011). The Chernobyl accident was a power-surge accident that was caused by a failure of control of a fission chain reaction, which instantaneously destroyed the reactor and building, whereas the Fukushima-1 acci...

Comprehensive data on ionising radiation from Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in the town of Miharu, Fukushima Prefecture: The Misho Project.

Data related to radioactivity released from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident on 15 March 2011 gathered by residents of Miharu, Fukushima Prefecture, and by Tohoku University are presented. These data sets consist of (1) the earliest radiation monitoring by a Geiger counter in the town, (2) ratios of radioactivity between (132)Te and (137)Cs for a wide area between Fuku...
